AUD to CAD — compare your quote with the mid-market rate

Australian Dollar → Canadian Dollar

AUD → CAD links two commodity currencies, with steady migration and working-holiday flows between Australia and Canada. Liquidity is good but it's a cross, so retail spreads run a touch wider than AUD/USD — 1.5–2.5% at the banks is common, while specialists price inside 0.5%.

About the AUD/CAD pair

This page shows today’s wholesale AUD/CAD mid-market rate beside the rate a bank, broker, or kiosk has quoted you. The result is the gap between the two, as a percentage and an amount, in four tiers: under 0.3%, 0.3–1%, 1–3% and over 3% of the amount. The mid-market rate is the rate banks trade at, not a rate you can transact at directly — providers add their margin on top, and that margin is the gap RateCheck shows.

Who sends money on this route

Australian dollars go to Canadian dollars for Australians on working-holiday visas and ski seasons in Whistler and Banff, for families with students at Canadian universities, and for Australians who have emigrated to Canada and bring savings across.

Mining and resources companies with operations in both countries, and Australian firms paying Canadian contractors, make up the business side of the flow.

What moves AUD/CAD

The Reserve Bank of Australia and the Bank of Canada set the policy rates. Both currencies are commodity-linked, but to different commodities: the Australian dollar follows iron ore, coal and gas, and the Canadian dollar follows crude oil.

Australia's quarterly consumer price index, its labour force survey and RBA decisions matter on one side; Canada's monthly employment report, inflation and Bank of Canada decisions on the other.

Because both currencies tend to move the same way against the US dollar in risk-on and risk-off markets, AUD/CAD is a comparatively steady cross, moving more on relative commodity prices and rate differences than on global mood.

How to read a quote

AUD/CAD is quoted as Canadian dollars per Australian dollar, a figure near or below one. A customer rate below the mid-market rate delivers fewer Canadian dollars, and the gap is the provider's margin.

Retail bank margins on international transfers are commonly a few per cent; specialist providers are often under one per cent. The cross is priced through the US dollar in the wholesale market.

The RBA’s cash rate target, its next decision date and AUD/USD on recent decision days are on the RBA cash rate page.

Common questions

How far is my AUD/CAD quote from the mid-market rate?+
Compare the rate you've been quoted with the live mid-market AUD/CAD rate — the wholesale rate banks trade at. RateCheck shows the gap as a percentage and an amount, in four tiers: under 0.3%, 0.3–1%, 1–3% and over 3% of the amount.
How much do banks and brokers charge to convert Australian dollar to Canadian dollar?+
Retail bank margins on international transfers are commonly a few per cent; specialist providers are often under one per cent. The margin is built into the exchange rate, usually on top of any fixed transfer fee, and is rarely shown separately. RateCheck shows it as the gap between your quote and the mid-market AUD/CAD rate.
Is the mid-market AUD/CAD rate the rate I'll actually get?+
No. The mid-market (interbank) rate is the wholesale reference; providers add their margin on top. It's the rate the gap is measured from, not a rate you can transact at directly.
Why do the Australian and Canadian dollars often move together?+
Both are commodity exporters with floating currencies that investors treat as growth-sensitive. In stressed markets both tend to fall against the US dollar; in calm markets both tend to rise. The cross between them changes less as a result.
What separates AUD/CAD when the two diverge?+
Differences in commodity prices, chiefly oil for Canada versus iron ore and coal for Australia, and differences in the two central banks' rate paths are the usual sources of divergence.
Do Canadian banks charge to receive Australian dollars?+
Many apply a fee to incoming international payments, and Australian dollars arriving unconverted are exchanged at the receiving bank's rate. Sending Canadian dollars makes the conversion visible before the money leaves.
