NZD to AUD — compare your quote with the mid-market rate
New Zealand Dollar → Australian Dollar
NZD → AUD is the trans-Tasman corridor from the New Zealand side — wages, property, and family money heading across the ditch. The mid moves modestly; NZ banks typically quote 1–2% over it on retail conversions, and online specialists clear under 0.5%.
About the NZD/AUD pair
This page shows today’s wholesale NZD/AUD mid-market rate beside the rate a bank, broker, or kiosk has quoted you. The result is the gap between the two, as a percentage and an amount, in four tiers: under 0.3%, 0.3–1%, 1–3% and over 3% of the amount. The mid-market rate is the rate banks trade at, not a rate you can transact at directly — providers add their margin on top, and that margin is the gap RateCheck shows.
Who sends money on this route
New Zealand dollars go to Australian dollars for the large number of New Zealanders living and working in Australia, who send savings and support across the Tasman, and for New Zealand exporters paying Australian suppliers and distributors.
Families fund students at Australian universities, New Zealand businesses pay Australian-based staff, and property purchases in Queensland and New South Wales by New Zealand residents add larger transfers.
What moves NZD/AUD
The Reserve Bank of New Zealand and the Reserve Bank of Australia set the policy rates. The two economies are closely linked, and the pair moves mainly on the gap between the rates and on differences in dairy prices, which matter for New Zealand, versus iron ore and coal prices, which matter for Australia.
New Zealand's quarterly consumer price index, its GDP figures and each RBNZ decision matter on one side. Australia's quarterly inflation, labour force survey and RBA decision matter on the other.
NZD/AUD is one of the steadier crosses in the region, since both currencies tend to rise and fall together against the US dollar.
How to read a quote
NZD/AUD is quoted as Australian dollars per New Zealand dollar, a figure below one. A customer rate below the mid-market rate delivers fewer Australian dollars, and the gap is the provider's margin.
Because the number is below one, a difference in the third decimal place is already a noticeable share of the amount. Retail bank margins on trans-Tasman transfers are commonly a few per cent; specialist providers are often under one per cent.
