About the AUD/JPY pair

This page shows today’s wholesale AUD/JPY mid-market rate beside the rate a bank, broker, or kiosk has quoted you. The result is the gap between the two, as a percentage and an amount, in four tiers: under 0.3%, 0.3–1%, 1–3% and over 3% of the amount. The mid-market rate is the rate banks trade at, not a rate you can transact at directly — providers add their margin on top, and that margin is the gap RateCheck shows.

Who sends money on this route

Australian dollars go to yen for tourism, which has grown strongly, with skiing in Hokkaido and city trips to Tokyo and Osaka; for Australian importers of Japanese cars, machinery and electronics; and for families funding students on exchange in Japan.

Australian residents working in Japan on holiday and teaching visas, and businesses licensing Japanese content, add smaller regular flows.

What moves AUD/JPY

The Reserve Bank of Australia and the Bank of Japan set the policy rates. Australian rates have sat well above Japanese rates for most of the past two decades, which makes AUD/JPY a classic carry cross: it tends to rise when markets are calm and fall sharply when they are stressed.

Australia's quarterly consumer price index, its labour force survey and RBA decisions matter on one side, along with commodity prices. Each Bank of Japan meeting, Japanese inflation and the Tankan survey matter on the other, and Japan's finance ministry has intervened during sharp yen moves.

The pair is among the most risk-sensitive of the major crosses.

How to read a quote

AUD/JPY is quoted as yen per Australian dollar, to two or three decimal places. A customer rate below the mid-market rate delivers fewer yen, and the gap is the provider's margin.

A difference of one yen per Australian dollar is around one per cent of the amount at typical levels. Retail bank margins are commonly a few per cent; specialist providers are often under one per cent. Cash exchanged on arrival in Japan often carries a wider margin than a transfer arranged beforehand.

The RBA’s cash rate target, its next decision date and AUD/USD on recent decision days are on the RBA cash rate page.

Common questions

How far is my AUD/JPY quote from the mid-market rate?+
Compare the rate you've been quoted with the live mid-market AUD/JPY rate — the wholesale rate banks trade at. RateCheck shows the gap as a percentage and an amount, in four tiers: under 0.3%, 0.3–1%, 1–3% and over 3% of the amount.
How much do banks and brokers charge to convert Australian dollar to Japanese yen?+
Retail bank margins on international transfers are commonly a few per cent; specialist providers are often under one per cent. The margin is built into the exchange rate, usually on top of any fixed transfer fee, and is rarely shown separately. RateCheck shows it as the gap between your quote and the mid-market AUD/JPY rate.
Is the mid-market AUD/JPY rate the rate I'll actually get?+
No. The mid-market (interbank) rate is the wholesale reference; providers add their margin on top. It's the rate the gap is measured from, not a rate you can transact at directly.
Why is AUD/JPY called a carry cross?+
Investors have long borrowed low-yielding yen to hold higher-yielding Australian dollars. That trade builds up in calm markets and unwinds quickly in stressed ones, so the pair moves strongly with global risk appetite.
Is it common to exchange Australian dollars for yen in Japan?+
Japan remains cash-heavy in places, and counters at airports and stations exchange Australian dollars. Their margins are typically wider than a bank transfer or a card, and ATM withdrawals on a card are priced at the card issuer's rate plus its fee.
Does a Japanese bank charge to receive Australian dollars?+
Incoming international transfers often attract a lifting fee, and Australian dollars arriving unconverted are exchanged at the bank's own rate. Sending yen makes the rate visible before the money leaves.
